New York-based dre.dance was founded in 2004 by two longtime friends and Broadway colleagues, Andrew Palermo and Taye Diggs (currently seen on ABC's Private Practice). Given its roots, the troupe has an understandably dramatic flair, but the chief focus for the artistic directors is on delivering straightforward, contemporary dance with a message. The piece "beyond.words" was inspired by a news story about a woman with severe autism. It draws upon a vocabulary of rocking, repetitive, and patterned movements developed through workshops, residencies, and interviews with people affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Tension and turbulence are tempered by peaceful moments in a work that strives to capture the mysteries of the mind through the communication of the body.
