Dom Irrera recently took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to talk to City Pages about his upcoming shows in Minnesota. "Busy schedule my ass. I was asleep," he says. "Thanks for calling; I was lonely." Irrera, who is just back from Australia, does stay busy with a regular gig at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, where he hosts a podcast called Dom Irrera Live from the Laugh Factory. On the show he interviews comedians who have just performed at the club. "What helps is that guys like Joe Rogan and Bill Burr will do it," he says. "We had Rob Schneider on last week. He's terrific. He's so effortless." After so many years in the business, Irrera has an eye for what works. "I told Dave Attell, 'You're such a strong comic,'" he recalls. Attell was having none of it. "He told me, 'I hate my act, and I hate myself.'" To which Irrera told him, "Keep up the self-hatred. That's what makes you so good." As a whole, though, the world of standup may be a bit watered down, says Irrera. "Comedy Central gave everyone a half-hour special," he says. "They don't give as much money as they used to. When I did it they paid $50,000. Now it's $15,000. You get what you pay for. I wish everyone well, but they gave specials to people who weren't that special, you know?" For Irrera, sometimes less is more. "An hour is too long for standup," he says. "I love doing standup, but 45 minutes is plenty." 18+; 21+ later shows.
