Devendra Banhart

Devendra's early recordings have a real eerie vibe to them. There is an arresting darkness in his voice that shivers timbre to the marrow. Yet even then, his spontaneous ramblings possessed the cheerful gait of a young child gamboling the afternoon away. These days, the perennially bearded troubadour is pretty much all sunshine and flowers. The man simply oozes peace and harmony out of his every hairy pore. Surrounding himself with a community of friends that make up the greater public image of New Weird America, Banhart is both figurehead and seer for all things folk or psychedelic. His upcoming release, Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, features contributions from British folk icon Vashti Bunyan, actor Gael Garcia Garnel, and Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes, among others. Banhart's touring with his usual band (Power Mineral/Hairy Fairies/Stoner Boner/whatever kooky handle suits the moment); expect a vision of '60s psychedelia as vivid as any acid flashback. With Rio En Medio. 18+.
