Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet

Like the entire Marsalis musical dynasty, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis has been educated in jazz and classical music, has a deep appreciation for jazz tradition, is an elegant musician and composer, and is tirelessly involved in community and education projects. Although he is a talented musician who has played plenty of high-profile sessions, and has been favorably compared with the late 'bone great J.J. Johnson, Delfeayo has spent much of his time on the other side of the board as a Grammy-winning producer of more than 75 albums. In the last few years, he's led all-star tributes to Count Basie and Louis Armstrong at Orchestra Hall. Recently he's been reworking Duke Ellington's "Sweet Thunder," a suite for a 15-piece orchestra inspired by Shakespearean themes and characters, with a recording due in the fall. For these Dakota dates, however, Delfeayo will lead a quintet including saxophonist Mark Gross, pianist Richard Johnson, bassist Dean Hulett, and drummer Marion Felder, with the focus likely on his own compositions. $35 at 7 p.m.; $20 at 9:30 p.m.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays. Starts: May 12. Continues through May 13, 2009
