Debra DiGiovanni

Debra DiGiovanni may have just restored our faith in reality television. The Canadian comic first gained wide U.S. exposure in 2007 on Last Comic Standing. Unlike many of the folks who participated on that program during its run, DiGiovanni actually had to stand in line and audition to be on the show. "Honest to gosh," she insists, "it was just lining up. There was a snowstorm that day in Montreal. It was crazy. A lot of people who stood in line made it to the elimination show that night." It was there that she was plucked from the pack and sent to Los Angeles. "That was huge," she says. "I used to think, 'Was that a dream? Oh, no it wasn't a dream.'" Winning the contest was secondary to just being on national TV in the U.S., though. "It got me a work visa, management, as well as being invited to play in places like the U.K. and Australia." Her effervescent style helped her stand out, and while she's still quite enthusiastic onstage, she admits it's not all sunshine and lollipops. "There's still a happy vibe to it," she says. "I'm a happy person, but as you go on in life, things start to enrage you a bit more. And as you get older and more confident it's easier to talk about the things that enrage you." 18+; 21+ later shows.
