David Murray Infinity Quartet with Macy Gray
On his latest project, saxophone colossus David Murray is touring with his new Infinity Quartet and singular soul singer Macy Gray. Infinity's just-released Be My Monster Love finds Murray his usual brilliant self on tenor, his rich, muscular tone dancing from deeply lyrical swing and bop-influenced stuff to raucous blossoms of free jazz, all delivered with the consummate passion of one of the finest saxophonists on the planet. Gray, who previously worked with Murray on Roots drummer ?uestlove's Afro-Picks project, sings the title track, electrifying the intense lyrics of novelist Ishmael Reed. Gray should have more extensive role live, especially considering the absence of soul-jazz singer Gregory Porter, who sings three other cuts on the album. Pianist Marc Cary, bassist Jaribu Shahid, and drummer Nasheet Waits fill out the group.
Mondays, Sundays, 7 & 9 p.m. Starts: June 23. Continues through June 24, 2013
