David Grisman Folk Jazz Trio

Monster mandolin maven David Grisman could have had a bit part alongside Llewyn Davis in the Coen brothers' new movie, since Grisman started out some half-century ago in and around the Greenwich Village folk scene. That's where he began putting together the pieces of what became his highly influential concoction of bluegrass, jazz, and folk, inspired in part by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Hot Club of France. His hot Dawg music was a key instigator of the progressive newgrass movement, and Grisman eventually experimented with everything from samba to klezmer. Grisman's Folk Jazz Trio focuses more on traditional material, ranging from country ballads to bluegrass standards and even Stephen Foster. The trio includes guitarist/vocalist Jim Hurst and Grisman's son, Samson, on bass.
