David Crowe

Seeing as he's done quite a bit of work in Canada, it seems appropriate to ask David Crowe, "Are you a hoser?" He pauses for a moment, then laughs. "My parents are. My dad was in the Royal Canadian Air Force," he says. That's the military one, not the radio comedy troupe known as the Royal Canadian Air Farce. It turns out that after being discharged, the elder Crowe came to work for Northwest Airlines right here in the Twin Cities. "I was born in Minneapolis, but we were quickly transferred to the West Coast." Acme was one of the first clubs he played as a touring standup. While he grew up stateside, Crowe has an affinity for his parents' homeland. "It's this really interesting combination of England and the United States. We Americans are sometimes suspect of academic learning. But in Canada, you get these guys who work on oil rigs and read Chaucer. This is of course an exaggeration. It's subtle, very subtle." Though he feels comfortable in most any part of the English-speaking world, he has often pondered his place in comedy. "Sometimes you feel like George Carlin, sometimes you feel like Bob Newhart, sometimes you feel like Bill Hicks — a little bit of everything." After stumbling onto his own Showtime special while channel-surfing one night, it hit him. "It was the first time I got a chance to have a first impression of myself. And there's absolutely no doubt what category I fell into. It was John Cleese. I had a suit on, and I was struggling to retain composure but falling off the horse every now and then. There was an expectation of dignity — like in British comedy." 18+.
