"I can't stand doing standup," says Twin City favorite Dave Mordal. "I'm hoping Joke Joint is the last standup I ever do." The local funny man, who once described himself as reluctant comic, has a steady gig as a member of the KQRS Morning Show and regularly performs standup. However, that may be coming to an end. "It's the worst job I've ever had in my life. I can't stand any aspect of it," he says. Radio, on the other hand, has turned out to be a great gig. "It doesn't pay much, but I'm not a big money guy. I just go in, do it, go home, come back, and do it again. I don't have to fly home, or drive eight hours, or sit in a hotel for 22 hours." A household name here, Mordal is known to the rest of the nation knows from his two seasons on NBC's Last Comic Standing, as well as his multiple appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the Discovery Channel series Wreckreation Nation. The last found Mordal traveling the country, chronicling the many odd ways in which folks use their leisure time. Some of the events he covered included lawn racing, "punkin' chunkin'," and bar stool sledding. "I did a gig a few months ago that was nine miles from my hometown, and 40 people showed up," he recalls, adding, "I don't need that. I'm done with it." Mordal's not mad; he would just rather concentrate on radio, where he can flex his wit every day, and where there's always something new to talk about. Sounds like he would make a great lottery winner. "Yeah," he laughs, "but I never seem to buy the tickets." With Trevor Anderson.
