Dave Mordal

After years as a local favorite, in 2003 comedian Dave Mordal appeared on the first season of NBC's Last Comic Standing. After returning for the show's third season, he finished second, gaining more national acclaim and attention. At the time, he seemed destined to become a national headliner. He returned to Minnesota, however, and decided to start touring once his son graduated from high school. Just as he was about to take that plan into motion, he was invited to join the KQRS Morning Show. The idea of a steady gig was—and still is—very appealing. "I was tired of travelling," he says. "It'll take the soul right out of you." Mordal is still able to flex his standup muscle at clubs in the Twin Cities, as well as neighboring states, and the radio show allows him to explore a different style of humor. "I love it," he says. "I'm working with a group of people that have been doing it for a long time, and they're wonderful. It's kind of nice to play off other people. I really enjoy that." On the radio, Mordal comments on current events, a topic he doesn't cover much onstage. "It's actually kind of nice, because it challenges me to write current stuff. There's nothing I hate more than watching a comic in 2011 go, 'Hey, remember O.J?' so he can bring out his horrible O.J. bit." Meanwhile, Mordal is enjoying his day job and the opportunities he has to perform around the state. "I'm not sure where I'll go from here. I've never really had a lot of goals. I just kind of take it as it comes. We'll see what happens. I could get hit by a bus tomorrow," he adds dryly.
