Dave Landau

Comedian Dave Landau majored in theater and film at college. "I always had a real big passion for film," he says, "so I decided to make one." Indeed, last summer Landau took three weeks off to make a film in his hometown of Detroit. "We shot it in 15 days, which is probably a world record." Being on a tight budget necessitated the fast-paced schedule. Drawn from his own life, The King is about a teenager in 1999 who gets a car for his birthday and promptly takes it, along with some buddies, from the suburbs to the ghetto to buy beer. Landau first tried selling it in Hollywood, but realized the final product would look nothing like his vision. As soon as filming wrapped, he was back onstage. "I've been talking more and more about things from my own life," he explains. "Even the jokey-jokes are drawn from things happening in my life." Occasionally he'll dabble in politics, as it's something he's very interested in, but he is weary. "I'm kind of shocked at the amount of hate for the current president," Landau says. "So, I will play with that a little bit just to see people's reaction in the crowd, just to see who gets freaked out. But then sometimes I avoid it, because people have a psychotic passion for politics, and my view is, across the board, that we're going to get screwed no matter what. Especially me being a middle-class American. Also, it amazes me when the children of these filthy rich people are die-hard liberals and poor people living in trailers are Republicans through and through. It's kind of hilarious to me." Matthew Broussard opens.
