Dave Attell

Dave Attell is back on the road and loving it. His Showtime series, Dave's Old Porn, was not renewed for a third season, but he looks upon that decision as a blessing as it allows him to get back to working on his standup. "I'm trying to take seasons one and two and put them on DVD for people who don't have cable and didn't get a chance to see the show," he says. The program had a pretty loyal following. "It was retro porn from the '70s and '80s, and the iconic stars who made it, and we'd do Mystery Science-like riffs. We'd do a tribute [to the porn stars]." Of course, he enjoyed researching each episode. "That was easy. That was cake," he says. Minneapolis audiences will get a rare chance to see a full Dave Attell set when he performs at Acme on Friday and Saturday. Lately, he has been part of a theater tour with Artie Lange, Amy Schumer, and Jim Norton called the Anti Social Comedy Tour. "It's a great way to do theater shows, which we do for 20 to 30 minutes. It's like this last hurrah of blue comedy," he says. This club date, though, is uniquely appealing to him. "The crowds in Minneapolis are cool. They're into comedy, and they come out and see it, and that's difficult. There's a lot of comedy content out there and very little audience." Audiences respond to Attell, who is often regarded as a comedian's comedian. He tries to deny it, but he is looked up to by comics old and young. Perhaps it's because his work ethic is so straightforward. "I do some topical stuff, but the topics lately have been sad. I look for good jokes about the economy and the weather and growing-old stuff, like my prostate. That's always good," he says. 18+.
