Daniel Tosh

It's easy to dismiss Comedy Central's wildly popular clip show Tosh.0 as America's Funniest Home Videos for the Adderall generation, but it's awfully difficult not to laugh at it. Dudes taking nut shots and drunk girls embarrassing themselves make for evergreen comedy. Away from the show's sparse green-screen set, however, host Daniel Tosh is more provocateur than ringmaster. Tosh's standup hinges on the last great iconoclasm in modern multicultural America: white male privilege. He revels in being the anti-underdog, never breaking his smirking character — and leaves it up to you to detect the irony. Tosh is up to much more than fratboy mischief; he's using his brash persona and tightly constructed jokes to jab at the softest spots in the American psyche, and he does it all while deftly straddling the line between Puckish wit and gleeful sociopath. It's a high-wire act he makes look as easy as a sunny stroll down Hermosa Beach.
