Year after year the University of Minnesota’s nationally acclaimed dance program turns out dancers who literally leap into major companies here and elsewhere. Part of their rigorous training includes working with nationally recognized dance makers who challenge them on every level, and who in turn get inspired by these students’ energy, intelligence, and meticulously trained bodies. This year’s program includes new works by Uruguay-born phenom Luciana Achugar and former Alvin Ailey dancer Marcus Jarrell Willis. Also on deck is the hyper-energized “Torrent” by Brian Brooks, labeled the “it boy” of contemporary American dance, whose company performance at Northrop in April includes the U of M dancers; and Minneapolis-based Rosy Simas, a Native American artist and activist.
