Cy Amundson is back in his hometown to headline a week of shows at Acme Comedy Co. For the past few years he has been based in Los Angeles, where he has been able to focus more on acting. "Last year was my first pilot season, and even though I haven't gotten anything yet, after traveling around for a number of years, it's nice to be at home in a central location and able to focus on what's here in Los Angeles." Amundson hails from a very talented family, though it's musical aptitude that his father and brothers possess. "But my mom shouldn't even sing in church," he laughs. Young Amundson was not allowed to watch MTV growing up, so he absorbed hours of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore, Green Acres, and Cheers instead. "I was like, 'I want to be on one of those shows!'" When he was older, Saturday Night Live really got him thinking about performing comedy. However, standup didn't figure into his plans until his brother-in-law suggested signing up for a comedy contest in Minneapolis. He was hooked instantly, particularly by the immediate response, which is still a thrill. "You don't have to wait four weeks to find out if something is funny or not," he says. Though he doesn't have the musical abilities of his brothers or his father, Amundson still thinks the process and talent level for being successful in comedy is similar. "If you can write creatively, it's just about learning the format," he says. "Jokes are a little different, because there has to be humor there, but a good creative writer can slide into any category. I've always thought that." 18+.
