The suburbs are often depicted as enclaves of cordiality where neighbors look after one another. The truth, of course, is that suburban homes can feel as alienating as any urban dwelling. Exploring the land of meticulously maintained lawns, playwright Daniel MacIvor's Cul-de-Sac introduces a community whose voyeuristic leanings are seldom seen as a violation of privacy, whereas assisting a neighbor in crisis is an intrusion on personal space. Or so it would seem when an ominous sound disturbs the quiet of the night, alerting the insulated homes to a horrific crime. A murder has been committed and the victim, a young gay man, was one of their neighbors. The varied reactions of the isolated community members form an ambitious multi-perspective narrative performed by a single actor. Requiring actors to inhabit a wildly diverse range of roles, often within the same scene, the performance is fraught with potential pitfalls. Loudmouth Collective, however, has never shied away from challenging material. On the contrary, by selecting MacIvor's play, the group has furthered a reputation for producing culturally relevant, emotionally direct work. Contributing greatly to the cause will be Wade A. Vaughn, a talented performer whose skills will no doubt be tested by the continual shifting of roles. Under the direction of Natalie Novacek, Cul-de-Sac is a murder mystery in which the boundaries of complicity go beyond property lines.
