Courtney McClean & the Dirty Curls' Naughtybilly Hoedown
Courtney McClean and the Dirty Curls do not take themselves very seriously, and this is a good thing—raunchy hillbilly tunes don't really warrant pensive analysis. In the birth of their projects (and indeed in the formation of the Curls themselves), one may intuit the influence of alcohol and a willingness to embrace free association ("Hey guys, I got it. A trashy-novel book club—let's do it!"). This weeklong naughtybilly hoedown is no exception. As part of the Storefront-in-a-Box project, in which organizations rent out the old Arise! Bookstore space for a week at a time, the hoedown boasts a schedule of slightly hickish and filthy-minded endeavors. Show up Wednesday night and country up your clothes with appliques and rhinestones, just in time to wear them back for Thursday's party—complete with keg beer and liquor—in celebration of Courtney McClean's birthday. Friday there'll a performance of a play penned by bassist Max "Bunny" Sparber called Sleaze Book Club, as well as an erotic open mic. Saturday's a hodgepodge, from a thrift sale to hula-hoop lessons to music in the evening. Sunday features a writing party; swing by and brainstorm some dirty song lyrics with the Curls, or pen an obscene limerick or two for that evening's Twin Cities Limerick Contest at Kieran's.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 6 p.m.-midnight; Saturdays, 11-midnight; Sundays, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Starts: Aug. 4. Continues through Aug. 8, 2010
