CONvergence 2013: British Invasion
You can eat grilled hot dogs and wave the American flag (especially if you come dressed as Captain America or Wonder Woman), but this year's Fourth of July installment of CONvergence will be focusing on the Anglophile areas of fandom. Panel talks of decidedly British flavor include Dr. Who primers, Misfits and Being Human fans chats, talks on U.K. cuisine (including crumpets), and more. Or go broad with lectures on the science of sex toys, heroines in literature, and vampires from Dracula to Edward Cullen. Other activities scheduled include movie screenings (V for Vendetta, Brave, Cockneys vs. Zombies, the best James Bond credits), gaming parties (Magic: The Gathering, Pathfinder Society, open LAN gaming), local readings, and workshops for those looking to improve their creative writing, leather working, or pipe-cleaner dragon making skills, among other things. Guests of honor include Caitlin Blackwood (young Amelia Pond on Dr. Who), io9.com managing editor Charlie Jane Anders, MST3K alums Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy, and others. Looking to stay up late? Check out the roster of parties scheduled into the wee hours of the morning, such as epic 8-bit gaming, a family-friendly Hobbit celebration, an Alice in Wonderland tea party, and a British "pub" offering beer.
