CONvergence 2012: Wonder Women
It's 2012, and the words "geek" and "nerd" aren't insults anymore. The days of being shoved into lockers because you have the entire script of The Princess Bride memorized are over. In the modern day, loving sci-fi and fantasy means joining thousands of your nerdy brethren at the Bloomington Double Tree for a four-day party celebrating everything from Babylon 5 to Tunnels & Trolls. This year's CONvergence theme is "Wonder Women," highlighting the oft-overlooked ladies of geek culture. The motif will likely extend throughout the perennial events of CON. Panel discussions include a talk on "Heroines of Anime and Manga" and science-y panels on subjects like "Evolution and the Female Orgasm." Special guests include famous ladies such as Dr. Who's Sophie Aldred and fantasy artist Ruth Thompson (and many others), available for photos, conversation, and autographs. There'll be free food and drink, impromptu and scheduled board games, tabletop role playing, and LAN computer gaming. The annual costume contest packs in fans as dedicated cosplayers recreate their favorite characters, and folks should expect a welcome preponderance of female characters this year. There's far more being offered at CONvergence than can be encapsulated in 200 words, but rest assured that whether you're Firefly's number-one fan or just enjoy an occasional game of Pandemic, CON is the event of the year.
