Contempo Physical Dance
Choreographer Maricano Silva dos Santos employs the explosive dance of his native land to tell the harrowing story of African slaves in Brazil. "SenZalma" combines the words "senzala" (slave quarters) and "alma" (soul), because the slaves were believed to lack souls. Featuring original music by Brazilian composer Divan, the piece fuses Afro-Brazilian dance and the marshal arts form capoeira with contemporary dance. In Dos Santos's capable hands, even the lamentable subject of slavery becomes a celebration of the human spirit. Animated by vibrant energy and propulsive Latin rhythms, his youthful company delivers dance theater that interrogates history. (Image by Jenny Pennaz and Mehdi Kennar)
