Conor Oberst, one of our foremost chroniclers of despondence, has released more than a dozen albums across a number of projects. The Omaha native's sheer songwriting intuition (he started recording when he was around 14), stormy strumming, and, above all, his crumbling-yet-fearless voice sound fresh even when paired with chord progressions we've heard a hundred times before. His brand-new Upside Down Mountain is a gentle outing, with straight-up compositions like "Hundreds of Ways" providing an easygoing pace. If it's not in the top tier of the 34-year-old's discography — a level that includes Bright Eyes' Fevers and Mirrors and I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning — its general friendliness makes for a collection of songs he should particularly enjoy playing live.
