Completely Hollywood (abridged)

With the upcoming Oscars marking the final coronation of the movie industry's annual awards season, Hollywood can be expected to produce predictably respectful tributes to cinema's storied history. Just in time to burst the bubble of celluloid solemnity, Chameleon Theatre Circle is unveiling the defiantly irreverent Completely Hollywood (abridged), a frenetically paced satire riffing on the most hackneyed of movie clichés stretching from the silent era to the modern blockbuster. Written by Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor (with contributions from Dominic Conti), principal members of the nationally known, long-running Reduced Shakespeare Company, Completely Hollywood (abridged) chucks the entirety of movie history into a blender of comic chaos. Breathlessly performed, the madcap effort essentially deconstructs cinema's most overworked tropes and stereotypical roles, lampooning the popular conventions of virtually every conceivable genre. Aspiring to reference over 187 of the commonly cited "greatest films" in history, the work cleverly mashes up settings and characters from over 100 years, allowing for slapstick take-downs on the most sacred of Hollywood classics. With a script that seldom allows for pauses, director Phil Gonzales will have a formidable task just ensuring that his four-person cast keeps up with the rapid comic pace. Should they pull it off, the satiric hysterics ensure a cinematic tribute livelier than even the most deferential of montages.
