Companhia Urbana de Dança: Na Pista and ID: Entidades
Straight from the infamous favelas of Rio de Janeiro, the eight young men of Companhia Urbana de Dança explore the urban culture of Brazil and their own gritty life stories. Choreographer Sonia Destri Lie has created a physically intense movement vocabulary — part hip-hop, part Brazilian rhythms, part contemporary modern dance — that is both subtle and explosive. Of "ID: Entidades" the New York Times says, "Rodrigo Marçal's score is full of enjoyably recognizable samples, and so is the choreography: samba, capoeira, line dances, vogueing, bits of Michael Jackson videos." Never have cultural roots, urban experience, and propulsive dance energy come together more spectacularly. The group will also perform "Na Pista." (Photo by Renato Mangolin)
