Color Me Gone: the Racing Picture
Whatever cinematic benefits have been gained by CGI technology, one of the most regrettable sacrifices has been that of physical daring. For a case study, compare the white-knuckle stunt driving of car chases in earlier films against their digitally created contemporaries. Whereas real-world physics lend heart-racing verisimilitude to stunt driving, CGI racing too often comes across as a flat spectacle, impressively rendered but empty of consequence. Any moviegoers in need of convincing—or those simply seeking a vicarious escape from our ice-coated Minnesota streets—are advised to seek out Take-Up Productions. A local stalwart of repertory cinema, the organization is revving up for a freewheeling, tire-squealin' ode to speeding hell-bent down the road. The series, "Color Me Gone: The Racing Picture," launches with one of Elvis Presley's most memorable roles as guitar-playing, racecar-driving roustabout Lucky Jackson in Viva Las Vegas. The following weekend will feature a pairing of Smokey and the Bandit with Two-Lane Blacktop. Subsequent dates will offer the likes of Fast Company, (January 14-15), Vanishing Point (January 21-23), and Grand Prix (January 28-30). Put your nose to the air.
