Codes and Coordinates

Nothing raises an artist's profile quite like getting his work destroyed. This past June, visual artist Chris Williams (a.k.a. CAW) gained local notoriety when his mural, created on the Midtown Greenway for the Greenway Glow, was partially whitewashed by the county — despite Williams receiving permission from the building's landlord, the Midtown Greenway Coalition, and Sunrise Cyclery — for not having a permit. Fortunately, the cleanup crew ran out of paint before it was erased completely, so Williams ended up creatively evolving the work into a giant, dragon-like creature. This Thursday, Williams will be taking his talents into a gallery setting for the opening at Gallery One in the TractorWorks Building. This show is part of the Arts Leadership Program, which exhibits art in corporate spaces. Gallery One has employed Williams's frequent collaborator Erin Sayer to curate the event, which includes Williams's paintings exploring the ancient craft of symbology. Williams, who has been inspired by old monuments, hieroglyphics, and other symbols, has created his own code-like structure of implied cryptography. There will be an opening reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 15.
