Cirque du SoGay V: Beyond Marriage

The Queer Bike Gang's annual Cirque du SoGay connects LGBTQ folks and friends to community resources through two alleycat-style races. Now in its fifth installment, this year's event, titled "Beyond Marriage," strives to throw light on issues that have been overshadowed by Minnesota's recent legalization of same-sex marriage. "Task checkpoints can include talks about youth [issues], referendums, or even candidates up for election who might have a big impact on queer people in our city and county," says QBG coordinator E.G. Nelson. Part of the evening's challenge is plotting the quickest route possible. So bring a map, and remember that the distance you travel depends on how you connect the dots. The shorter "Virgin" route clocks in at under 15 miles. "The Harder! Faster!" route is more challenging, and falls somewhere between 25 and 30 miles. It also comes with an ominous warning. "I may or may not have a trick up my sleeve. Riders beware on that one," teases Nelson. The rides end at In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre with a party. To preregister, visit
