Chris Porter

Chris Porter isn't the same comic that many Americans discovered on NBC's Last Comic Standing back in 2006. "I'm not the same goofy kid," he says. "Being beholden to that would be bad for me and bad for the audience." Indeed, Porter has grown into a devastatingly funny headliner who is less wide-eyed party comic, more annoyed grownup. "I am pretty exasperated nowadays, especially with 24-hour news and people watching it and thinking they're educated about things," he says. "They have them write in and tweet, and it's people who don't have jobs, and are sitting there watching CNN all day. They feel empowered. Like, 'Oh, everyone agrees with me.' No, you're crazy and that's why you don't have a job. I doubt the economy affected you. It's crazy and tiring." Recently Porter made a foray into another grownup activity; he took a gig on a cruise ship, his first and last it turns out. "It was the most terrible thing I've ever done," he explains. The audiences were great, "but it's weird when the stage is going up and down." It wasn't a dream vacation, to be sure. "The line I was working for doesn't give performers guest quarters. They give you crew quarters, which is just one step above a white-collar prison." There has been an upside to his grumblings though, as an old friend pointed out. "He said to me, 'I've never seen you angrier onstage, or happier offstage.'" 18+.
