Caroline, or Change

The Guthrie's kick-off for its unique public meditation on the work of Tony Kushner couldn't have landed with greater soul, impact, and purpose. This story of a single mother in the South during the era of the Kennedy assassination nimbly elevates the mundane into the mythic, and its musical format melds soul, gospel, and pop into a stew that evokes the deep, bittersweet experience of living in America in the 20th century. And, lest we forget, Greta Oglesby in the title role is nothing short of a marvel, her titular maid coiled with conflict, racked with resignation, and afforded ample opportunity to kick all kinds of ass in the vocal department. You should not miss her. She's that good.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: April 24. Continues through June 21, 2009
