Building on Building: New Work by Erik Burke
Erik Burke, also known as Over Under, creates graffiti art on buildings. And sometimes his art is actually of buildings (this perhaps explains the title of his show). His subjects often consist of bodies trapped in houses or storefronts, their faces hidden as their arms and legs escape out windows and floorboards a la Alice in Wonderland. His pieces speak to the comforts of interior spaces—his characters often wear their domiciles as a dress or a mask—while also inviting feelings of claustrophobia. For Burke buildings are as much a muse at they are a canvas. For "Building on Building," the New York-based artist will continue to explore these themes, spray painting art on thin white paper, constructing sculptural installations, and creating short films. His new pieces blend cityscapes with old graffiti art, as well as other details found in urban signage, storefronts, and more. The opening reception is from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 28.
