Broken Social Scene
There's enough room in the increasingly splintered rock arena for musicians with overflowing ideas to go wherever their muse may take them, leading to solo albums, one-offs, and side projects that threaten to overtake more established groups. We know how bands fracture, but what about reconnecting? Enter Broken Social Scene, a small galaxy of Canadian indie stars who have formed a collective (they don't like the term "supergroup") that allows them to exercise some artistic freedom outside their other groups. Members of Stars, Feist, and Metric rotate in and out of the band, with the prolific duo of Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning somehow orchestrating the massive crew of players (as many as 19) who fall under the BSS umbrella. Since it's difficult to pull off a sparse atmosphere with so many members, BSS often swing for the fences, layering the strengths of each musician atop one another to create a towering, opulent sound. With such a wealth of talent on display, it could be one of the year's highlights. The Sea and Cake open. 18+.
