Brian Scolaro

"When I was a kid, my father made sure we had a healthy dose of the Marx Brothers and Laurel and Hardy," says comedian Brian Scolaro. "My mom showed us John Belushi and Bill Murray." He discovered Bill Cosby and George Carlin on his own. It was standup that helped give a boost to his first love: acting. "I love standup," he insists. "I'll do it until I die, which looks like it will be a few days from now." Scolaro has been seen on a variety of series, including the TBS sitcom Sullivan and Son, where he is a semi-regular, and Wizards of Waverly Place. Acting on the latter turned out to be a bit different from other sitcoms. "They like you to overact more," he says. "Those Disney Channel shows are like beginner sitcoms, I heard someone say once. They like it over the top. I always play it dry, but certainly I play it bigger." Onstage, Scolaro has been trying to go in a sillier direction. "I've been asking, 'Do you suppose there's a Chinese guy somewhere, who is very ticklish, and is named Gichy Goo?' That's so stupid, but that's the direction I've been going in," he laughs. Scolaro will tour through the summer, and if all goes well, he'll be back in California for some acting gigs come fall. "Standup is great," he says, "but no bachelorette party shows up and interrupts you while you're acting." 18+; 21+ later shows.
