Boz Scaggs

Recorded at Royal Studios, where the late Willie Mitchell helped create the signature Memphis sound with the likes of Al Green and Ann Peebles, Boz Scaggs's great new album is a tribute to that city's rich musical heritage while allowing for a little artistic latitude. Appropriately dubbed Memphis, the album was produced by Steve Jordan and features such Memphis scene stalwarts as guitarist Ray Parker Jr., bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Spooner Oldham. The result is a stylish evocation of classic Memphis soul, R&B, and blues. Scaggs's finely textured voice and smart phrasing shine, whether emulating Green's soaring falsetto on the Hi Records classic "So Good to Be Here," sidling through the Moments' "Love on a Two Way Street," caressing a folk-like version of the blues nugget "Corrina, Corrina," or muscling through roadhouse blues on Applejack Walroth's "Dry Spell."
