First as Smog, and lately under his real name, Bill Callahan has crafted powerful and precise songs over the course of 18 albums and two dozen years. On his latest effort, Dream River, loping and gentle melodies predominate, with airy open arrangements keeping the focus squarely on Callahan's hangdog croon and mordant wit. Callahan's the rare songwriter with truly poetic talents, equally adept serving up beautiful imagery and haunting turns of phrase ("All I want to do/Is make love to you/With a careless mind/Who cares what's mine?").
