Bif! Bam! Pow! Comic Book Movies!
Garnering critical acclaim while smashing box-office records, The Avengers is the first breakout blockbuster of summer 2012. The cinematic take on Marvel Comics' dream team, however, is far from the only evidence of Hollywood's revived enthusiasm for superheroes. The next two months alone will feature a fresh reboot of Marvel's arachnid-inspired crime-fighter (The Amazing Spider-Man) and the third installment of Christopher Nolan's wildly popular adaption of DC Comics' Batman (The Dark Knight Rises). Mainstream appeal has been a mixed blessing, though, for those fans who have long insisted that comic books offer more than the exploits of caped crusaders. Indeed, modern comics are as versatile as any art form, offering wildly inventive permutations of narrative formulas. Similarly so, cinematic translations of paneled pages allow an untapped vibrancy that defies print limitations. Such animated vitality forms the backdrop of BIF! BAM! POW! Comic Book Movies!, the latest retrospective from Take-Up Productions. Screening every weekend through June at Trylon microcinema, the series offers the eroticized sci-fi fantasies of Heavy Metal (1981), the Iranian autobiographical drama of Mariane Satrapi's Persepolis (2007), the satiric hedonism of Fritz the Cat (1972), the Queen-scored camp classic Flash Gordon (1972), the ecstatically stylized wit and action of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World (2010), and a biography of one of the most influential figures of the comic-book world, Crumb (1994).
Fridays, Saturdays, 7 & 9 p.m.; June 3-July 1, 5 & 9 p.m. Starts: June 1. Continues through July 1, 2012
