Beyond Ballroom Dance Company
Ballroom dance has a huge audience these days thanks to the popularity of reality show competitions, but this isn't the first time tripping the light fantastic has been so popular. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers certainly sold countless moviegoers on the magic of fancy footwork many decades ago, and more recent efforts like the 2005 film Mad Hot Ballroom demonstrate that even kids raised on hip hop can enjoy a good waltz. Still, there's nothing quite like seeing the smooth moves live, and Beyond Ballroom Dance Company are the local pros who make even the most challenging steps (in heels, no less) look so sublime. This weekend's concert features the work of three top ballroom talents: Montreal's Jean-Marc Genereux, a Canadian ballroom champion and choreographer for the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance?; Gary Pierce, a U.S. ballroom champion and founder of the New York-based American Ballroom Theater; and hometown hero Scott Anderson, a Fred Astaire National Champion and U.S. Rising Star Ballroom Champion.
