Betsy Ruth Byers: Elsewhere
Yves Klein's super-saturated forays into the spiritual voids of color and space continue to rivet viewers at the Walker Art Center. But this weekend at the Burnet Gallery, Minneapolis artist Betsy Ruth Byers explores her own abstract version of spaces neither here nor there, but somewhere in between. In her solo show "Elsewhere," she explores, through layers of oil on canvas, the sensation of the body immersed in water or pressed against rock, rendering through angular forms the merging of human and nature. At once sensually immersive and vibrantly compelling, her work blends the material reality of textural paint with messages about the immateriality of our spiritual and psychological selves. Neither here nor there, but everywhere. The public reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, January 21. (Pictured: Disjuncture)
