Ben Gleib emails and asks if his interview with City Pages can be done earlier than originally scheduled. He's been up all night, following a huge show at the Hollywood Improv. Exhausted but still giddy, he says, "The lineup was pretty epic. The order of the last five comics was Drew Carey, Dan Tosh, myself, Dane Cook, and Joe Rogan. It was really fun, jam-packed, sold out, and they had to turn people away." That Gleib moves in such comedy circles is not surprising. "The thing I've always been best at is comedy," he admits. "I don't have any other marketable skills. I've just liked making people laugh since I was literally five years old. My parents never made me turn off my TV until I wanted to, so I was staying up watching Johnny Carson and Saturday Night Live." In college, after hosting a successful talk show, he decided standup would indeed be his career. These days he likes to joke about everything from politics to social protocols, like so-called girly drinks. "I think it's weird that men can't drink delicious drinks," he says. "Why? There's no reason. I'm a man, so I like the taste of beer and whiskey, but you know what else I like the taste of? Strawberries."
Wednesdays-Sundays, 8 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 10:30 p.m. Starts: Sept. 2. Continues through Sept. 6, 2009
