Bausch, Bull, Edwards, Gastineau, Hansen, Hay
Three young performers — Non Edwards, Erika Hansen, and Emily Gastineau — are taking on the task of recreating solo pieces by three renowned pioneers of contemporary dance — Pina Bausch, Richard Bull, and Deborah Hay — in an evening of work exploring authorship and ownership in dance. Gastineau explains in an email that none of the pieces are being performed with permission from the choreographers' estates (two are deceased, one is not), and works are being rehearsed with little contact with the choreographers' former students and collaborators. Each evening will feature a mix of reconstructed choreography, improvisation, and inspiration, with lots of things to mull over, including what constitutes originality and how we can draw from past artists to make something new. "By design, this project brings up lots of juicy issues that we'd love to discuss with you after the show," says Gastineau. The dances will be performed on loop throughout the evenings, and viewers can come and go at any time.
