Barhopping: Happy Hour at Mayslack's
Some bars have a timeless quality, some are so trendy you know they will be out of style when you go there again next week, and some bars are so dated you can taste the staleness in the air, like the reclining chair where a long-gone old person used to chain smoke and watch Columbo. Mayslack's is a little mix of numbers one and three on this list, which isn't a bad thing at all. The timelessness comes from the classic pub woodwork, from the bar to the booths, and the decent beer list. The dated quality comes in unexpected places, but will probably serve as a conversation-starter, or at least give you something to laugh at when your drinking buddy runs to the restroom—for example, there's a as framed poster for Grumpier Old Men (rumor has it they filmed a scene at the bar). The main room is ideal for eating and drinking, while the inner room often hosts live music, mostly rock and blues, as well as quirky events, like the recent Beer Olympics. The happy hour runs daily Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will get you $2 pints, rails, and bottles. Later on Monday, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., you can order up taps and Captain Morgan for $2.50 as well. If you're looking to start your Saturday early, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. anything you order is $3. Always on special is Mayslack's beer of the month, which is Leinie's Fireside Nut Brown for $3.50 a bottle this November.
