Ballet of the Dolls: Nutcracker (Not So) Suite
Both classic and au courant, Myron Johnson's "Nutcracker (Not So) Suite" gets a makeover every time it's presented. Originally created in 1987, the work takes all kinds of liberties with the story of Marie's journey from her Victorian living room to land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and from girl to woman. Johnson's version is set in 1970, complete with an authentically ghastly '70s wardrobe. Marie lives in a New York penthouse, where she mostly plays with her Barbie Dolls. When her funny uncle gives her a Ken doll for Christmas, all heck breaks loose. Marie begins her nightmare fantasy on the Lower East Side, where seedy characters, places, and adventures abound. It's a holiday treat with a welcome dose of tart.
