Ballet Hispanico

Latin dance rules as Ballet Hispanico recreates the 1950s scene at New York's famous Palladium Ballroom. Young company members attended mambo boot camp to find out what made that dance form sizzle in bygone eras. But Palladium Suite runs the gamut of Latin dance and throws in romantic ballet and aggressive duets. Then there are the lively denizens of the night, from amorous waiters to hard-hearted vamps. Jazz dance legend Ann Reinking (Dancin', A Chorus Line) has choreographed Ritmo y Ruido for the company, merging hip-hop and Afro-Cuban rhythms in an urban explosion of highly polished, hip-swivelin' action. On January 10 there's a special event at St. Paul's Cinema Ballroom, with dance lessons by Ballet Hispanico experts followed by a dance party. Package deals are available for both events, or you can buy tickets at the Cinema Ballroom door. Saturday dance and party tickets are $15; $30 for both nights. Saturday classes are from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.; party is 9 p.m. to midnight at Cinema Ballroom (1560 St. Clair Ave., St. Paul; 651.699.5910). Sunday night performance at the Ordway Center for the Arts (345 Washington St., St. Paul; 651.224.4222) is $25/$35 at the door at 7 p.m.
