Younger sister of virtuoso Brazilian guitarists Sérgio and Odair Assad, Badi Assad is a seasoned and compelling artist in her own right; she's also an accomplished finger-style acoustic guitarist, as well as a compelling singer and an increasingly gifted composer. Stylistically, she favors an often intriguing blend of MPB (música popular brasileira), world pop, jazz, and classical, all slathered with the sultry insouciance characteristic of much Brazilian music. As a vocalist she can soar, spew a torrent of rapid lyrics, etch delicate emotions, scat like Ella, and conjure a surprisingly wide array of percussive sounds. She sings in Portuguese and English on Between Love and Luck, her first album in seven years. She wrote virtually all the material, vividly musing about life, love, and infidelities while negotiating an impressively malleable, supple, even luxurious soundscape laced with samba, funk, rock, and jazz, stretching from cool caipirinha bliss to the brink of avant-garde dissonance.
