Considering its picturesque location on the banks of the Mississippi River near the landmark crossing of the Stone Arch Bridge, visitors to the Guthrie Theater could be forgiven the temptation of foregoing stage entertainment to instead unwind outdoors on a summer’s eve. In recognition of the area’s alluring natural charms, the enterprising organizers of Open Call, the Guthrie’s group of socially minded young theater enthusiasts, is hosting a Backyard Bash. Set on the theater’s West River Parkway lawn and service lot, the Backyard Bash encourages attendees to transform the space into a mass picnic with food and drinks provided by local vendors. Included in the ticket price will be an assortment of libations from such Minnesota companies as Fulton, Carlos Creek Winery, Sociable Cider Werks, as well as non-alcoholic botanical beverages from FRÏSA. As every picnic requires an enticing spread of edible options, the Backyard Bash also features a Food Truck Rally which (though not included in the ticket price) invites attendees to select from a veritable smorgasbord drawn from the mobile eateries of Green & The Grain, Hot Indian Foods, Peeps Hot Box and Market Bar-B-Que before finishing it off with desert from Cookie Cart. Bash goers are encouraged to spread out their own blankets (although the first 50 guests will receive a free beach mat), to enjoy the fireworks extravaganza that marks the event’s grand culmination.
