Avett Brothers at Somerset

North Carolina's Avett Brothers, among the standard-bearers of the burgeoning Americana-pop hybrid, head up their own mini festival in the bucolic environs of Western Wisconsin. Joining them will be Brandi Carlile, Dr. Dog, and the Wheeler Brothers. Siblings Scott and Seth Avett, plus bassist Bob Crawford, mingled rock, folk, bluegrass, and country, forged sturdy vocal harmonies, and broke through with 2007's Emotionalism, followed by two albums produced by Rick Rubin, I and Love and You and last fall's The Carpenter, whose prevailing theme is philosophical musing about death. Carlile, an impressive singer and literate songwriter, is adept at negotiating that rustic Americana vibe too, fashioning a fine blend of country, blues, gospel, pop, and, when so inclined (as on Bear Creek's "Raise Hell") simmering rock 'n' roll. Philly's Dr. Dog plays ambling, roots-touched rock and pop grounded in the late '60s and early '70s, laced with bits of psychedelia and scattered references to the Band and Harry Nilsson's whimsical melodies. The Wheelers, a quintet out of Austin, Texas, play amiable, rambling country-rock, alternating between the dusty, Southern rock spunk of "Sleep When I'm Dead" and the impressionistic picking of "You Got a Lot of Love," both from the new Gold Boots Glitter.
