August/206: Dance By Laurie Van Wieren
Choreographer, dancer, and impresario Laurie Van Wieren continues her yearlong retrospective this month with "August/206: Dance by Laurie Van Wieren." Last spring, Van Wieren—who also hosts the monthly dance showcase "9x22" at Bryant-Lake Bowl— showed the first component in the retrospective of her 30-year career, the humorously and rhetorically titled, "Who Made These Videotapes?" The performance, held at Studio 206 in the Ivy Building for the Arts, recaptured the exquisitely detailed movements and remarkable kinetic expressions that mark such singular dance-theater works as "Weak in the Knees," "Resort," and "Struggle with an Angel." But the show also included time to look at and ponder videos of past performances, show posters, and other remnants of Twin Cities dance from earlier iterations. Part two includes a gallery installation of Van Wieren's past work, a duet with Elliott Durko Lynch, and a work-in-progress performance with trusty cohorts Tom Carlson and Michelle Kinney, along with "newbies" Kristin Van Loon, Sally Rousse, and Joanna Furnans. Performances are free, but reservations recommended. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a seat. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday with a performance with Elliott Durko Lynch at 2 p.m.; performances with Van Wieren, Kristin Van Loon, and others are Thursday and Friday, August 25 and 26, at 8 p.m. (Photo by Warwick Green)
