Art Shanties Project
While some Minnesotans hit the frozen lakes for ice fishing, others go there to dabble in place making (a.k.a. creating art and performances in nontraditional, pop-up locations). This February, the Art Shanties Project returns, creating a mini-village filled with artists, scientists, actors, DJs, athletes, and other knowledgeable and talented folks on ice. The shenanigans have moved from Medicine Lake in Plymouth to White Bear Lake this year, but things look to be just as exciting. Shanties taking to the ice include the Dance Shanty (head inside for a dance party), the Jigsaw Shanty (play board games and brain teasers), the Curling Clubhouse Ice Shanty (learn to curl!), and the Creep Shanty (get spooked months before Halloween). Got a letter to mail? Visit the Mailroom Shanty. Curious about climate change? Hop on the Pedal Bear and learn a little while creating kinetic energy. Have something to say? Visit the Speak the Truth Shanty and try your hand at spoken word. Each weekend boasts a variety of cozy spots and outdoor areas where visitors can stop by, meet folks, and watch or partake in the magic. For more info, visit artshantyprojects.org.
