Ari Shaffir

How crude is Ari Shaffir? For starters, in 2008 he won the Dirtiest Comic Competition at the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles. From STD tests to his Jewish heritage, Shaffir is unrelenting. Fans of internet shows may remember him as The Amazing Racist. "The [producers] were putting it together, and they called the Comedy Store looking for someone who looked 'Jew-y,'" explains Shaffir, "and I'm the 'Jewiest' guy I know." In this series of vignettes, Shaffir would pull racially charged stunts steeped in irony. "We brainstormed to figure out the worst possible things we could do." A lot of folks didn't get it, though, including some of the people he encountered in the videos. Case in point: the time he dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Clan and went into a predominantly black neighborhood in Los Angeles driving a white minivan and saying "white power" in Southern drawl. "There's a Jew in a Klan outfit," he says looking back on that episode. "If you don't understand, then I don't know what to tell you." Sometimes even comedians don't get irony. "I was at the Comedy Store where I hang out with all my comedy friends," Shaffir says, "and someone came up to us and said something sort of ridiculous, and my friend says, 'Well, that guy is weird.' It suddenly hit me. If any comedian says something weird, it's probably a joke." Onstage, Shaffir has been crafting a new hour after recording a CD in late 2011. "I wanted to throw away all of my old material and repeat nothing from that album," he says. He's still dirty, and insists he will remain so, but now he's broadening his range of topics. "I see my friends becoming homeowners and parents, and I talk about how little I want that. What is it to be an adult now?" He also hosts a popular, and, of course, crass podcast called The Skeptic Tank where he interviews mostly other comics. 18+; 21+ later shows.
