Andrew Wykes: Land & Sea
Has British-born Andrew Wykes taken a cue from Minnesota winters? A season during which layers of slush, muck, snow, chipped ice, de-icer, and salt coat our sidewalks in monochromatic treachery? If only our current landscape was as beautiful to gaze upon as those Wykes creates with paint. His new series, "Land & Sea," was generated with heavy impasto layered on with a palette knife, creating abstract landscapes of color, line, and energy. "I paint the geography of where I find myself," he says in an artist's statement. Perhaps he found himself somewhere other than here when making these pieces — or remembering fondly a recent trip to Jamaica. Until spring arrives, his work is respite. There will be an opening reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 16. (Image: Ballinglen Valley Mayo Ireland)
