Andrew Bird: Fever Year

"Have I simply been ill this year? Or am I turning into some kind of animal?" asks Andrew Bird in Andrew Bird: Fever Year (2011). Directed by Xan Aranda, the documentary chronicles the tail end of Bird's somewhat hellish, yearlong tour that comprised 165 shows around the country. While his popularity has waxed and waned over the years, Bird has never lost his creative momentum, regularly releasing albums nearly every year. In fact, he's a musician so dedicated to his craft that he'll perform under the most dire conditions. Many scenes find the multifaceted frontman sweating profusely moments before performances that leave him pontificating on whether he's reached his physical limitations as a performer. In the movie, Bird is backed by his cohorts Michael Lewis, Minnesota musician Jeremy Ylvisaker, and digital handyman Martin Dosh. The concert scenes are from his two final 2009 dates at Milwaukee's Pabst Theater. There's also a rather poignant rehearsal that features him and Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, performing "Headsoak" on the bed of a hotel room.
