Anat Cohen Quartet

Since arriving in New York a little over a decade ago, Israeli-born multiple-reed player Anat Cohen has established herself as a spectacular, innovative player in an astounding range of contexts. Whether it's jazz (traditional, contemporary, big band), classical, or global genres (a myriad of permutations of Latin music), Cohen has been a standout, leading her own quartet or as a member of numerous others. Concentrating in particular on clarinet, she has racked up a slew of accolades. For the last three years she has been the Jazz Journalists Association's Clarinetist of the Year as well as topping the Rising Star-Clarinet category in DownBeat's critics' poll. She'll bring an all-star quartet to the Dakota, including pianist Benny Green, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash, playing together for the first time since last July recording Clarinetwork: Live at the Village Vanguard (Anzic). Inspired by the King of Swing, the Vanguard date was advertised as "Benny Goodman and Beyond," and that's what the group does, taking off on standards from Goodman's extensive repertoire and injecting them with chills and thrills sufficient to leave audiences on their feet and howling.
